Description

A template for briefing external suppliers: designers, videographers, photographers, agencies. Covers background, objectives, audience, deliverables, tone, timeline, and budget. Written plainly enough that both you and the supplier can actually use it, rather than file it and forget it. Comes as an editable Word document and a PDF.

How to use this

Fill this in before you speak to any supplier, not during the conversation. The discipline of writing it down first forces clarity on what you actually want, which makes everything that follows easier.

Share it directly with the supplier at the start of the project. Going through it together on a call tends to surface misunderstandings early, which is much cheaper than discovering them halfway through.

Delete any rows that are not relevant to your project. A shorter brief is usually a better brief. The sections on holidays and absences are there because forgetting to mention a two-week leave period halfway through a project is a very avoidable problem.

What’s included

  • Editable Word document (.docx)
  • PDF reference version

Who it’s for

Anyone who commissions creative work, whether you are briefing an in-house designer, a freelancer, or an agency. Useful for one-off projects and ongoing retainers alike.

Before you download

  • This brief works best when completed before you speak to a supplier, not during the conversation. The discipline of writing it down first is most of the value.
  • After downloading, you will find both files in your account.
  • You are getting a licence to use this and adapt it for your own work. You cannot sell, redistribute, or share it with others.
