AI has moved from novelty to everyday tool for a lot of freelancers. Research from Fast Forward shows that 84% of organisations are already using AI for internal operations, and the picture for independent consultants is similar: most are using it, at least some of the time, for writing, research, and day-to-day work.
The most common uses among solo and small-team consultants:
- Writing and editing proposals, reports, and client updates
- Research and summarising long documents
- Content creation for blogs, social media, and newsletters
- Workflow automation — scheduling, templates, admin
- Data analysis and reporting
The top challenges are also predictable: data privacy, not knowing which tools to trust, and finding time to actually learn them properly.
The freelancers getting the most out of AI aren’t replacing their thinking — they’re offloading the time-consuming parts of their work so they can focus on the parts that require their expertise and judgement.
